Discover "The Last Artifact" at IMEKO2024: A Landmark Documentary on Metrology and the Redefinition of the Kilogram

On Tuesday, August 27, We will host a special cinema event featuring the documentary "The Last Artifact." This film, directed by the Emmy Award-winning duo Jaime Jacobsen and Ed Watkins, delves into the historic redefinition of the kilogram and the comprehensive efforts to modernize the global measurement system.

The Significance of "The Last Artifact"

"The Last Artifact" offers an in-depth look at the intricate processes and international collaboration involved in redefining one of the most fundamental units of measurement. Since the French Revolution, the kilogram was defined by a physical object—a small metallic cylinder stored in a high-tech vault near Paris. This artifact has played a crucial role in various aspects of life, from everyday activities to groundbreaking scientific endeavours.

In 2018, the kilogram's definition was transformed, moving away from this physical object to a definition based on fundamental constants of nature. "The Last Artifact" documents this significant transition, highlighting the historical importance, the scientific challenges, and the future implications of this change.

Meet the Filmmakers

The documentary is co-produced and directed by Jaime Jacobsen and Ed Watkins, both of whom bring extensive experience and accolades in filmmaking. Jaime Jacobsen, in particular, has spent over a decade creating films that engage audiences with pressing scientific, environmental, and social issues. Her work has been showcased on major platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, PBS, and the BBC.

As part of the screening event at IMEKO2024, Jaime Jacobsen will be present to discuss the making of the film and to answer questions from the audience.
